Renovating in
Lighthouse Point.
Most of Lighthouse Point was built on canals dug in the 1950s and 1960s, so nearly every house is a waterfront decision. Original ranches stand beside new estates, which makes the first question in this city a simple one: renovate this house, or build a new one.

Canal-front rebuilds
Hillsboro Isles has roots in the 1950s, and older ranch-size homes stand next to newer estates. Venetian Isles has original homes mostly from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s, with rebuilds from 2005 and 2008 and new construction under way. Lake Placid mixes 1950s and 1970s originals with newer homes, and the research notes that most of them have pools.
Broker copy describes deep-water canals in Hillsboro Isles with no fixed bridges to Hillsboro Inlet, and Venetian Isles with a large turning basin. Treat both as claims to confirm. What is general knowledge is that a canal lot brings seawall, dock and boat-lift work into the project.
Renovation that respects a sound house
Coral Key Villas runs from 1957 to 2024. It holds 1990s and 2000s waterfront homes that, as general knowledge, are ready for new kitchens, baths and outdoor living. It also holds older houses that are candidates for rebuild. Lighthouse Point Estates is described with mid-century ranch homes suited to a full-gut remodel or a second-story or rear addition.
The original platted sections include a 1957 house renovated in 2005 that is now due another round, as well as mid-century ranches beside Mediterranean and coastal estates. A prior renovation is not a finished one. As general knowledge, roofs, impact glass, electrical and plumbing often come due on a house of that age.

Smaller ranches, condominiums and townhomes
Hillsboro Estates, Lighthouse Manor and Douglas Park are described as smaller ranch homes where kitchen and bath remodels and additions are typical. The research does not describe these areas in detail, and waterfront status is not confirmed.
Lighthouse Point also has condominium and townhome pockets, where unit remodels go through the association. The Lighthouse Point Yacht Club townhomes were built in 2024, so the work there is owner customization, not renovation.
Flood elevation and the seawall
As general knowledge, older slab-on-grade homes can run into flood elevation and substantial-improvement limits when the scope grows. This matters most for additions and for a full-gut remodel. Check with the city on flood rules before you design, and have the seawall inspected at the same time.

Questions owners ask
Should I renovate or rebuild a 1950s house in Lighthouse Point?+
The research shows both. Some owners are updating mid-century ranches, others are replacing them with new estates. The slab, the seawall and the flood rules usually decide it, so look at those first.
Will flood rules limit an addition to an older house?+
They can. Older homes built on slabs may face flood elevation or substantial-improvement limits as general knowledge. Check with the city which rules reach your lot before you design.
Is the seawall part of the renovation?+
On a canal lot it usually should be. Seawalls, docks and boat lifts come up on nearly every canal neighborhood in the research, so have the condition known before construction is priced.
